James Chandler to Speak at CCPL

Thursday, December 2, 2021

CCPL is pleased to welcome legal-thriller, bestselling Wyoming author James Chandler for a book talk and signing on December 2, 7pm. James Chandler is the pen name of Paul Phillips, who—along with his wife—has called Gillette home since 2004. His three novels follow Sam Johnstone, a troubled Army veteran who takes on a new job as an attorney in a small Wyoming town.

Phillips, a military brat, spent his early years traveling with his Air Force family before his parents settled in Nampa, Idaho.  As a young man, when he wasn’t catching fish or footballs for Nampa High School, he was roaming centerfield and trying to hit the breaking pitch.

While enrolled at Eastern Oregon University, he competed in intercollegiate baseball, and this past October, along with the entire 1980 EOU baseball team, he was inducted into the EOU Athletic Association Hall of Fame.  Following his otherwise mediocre college baseball career and graduation, he got married and exchanged jersey No. 7 for camouflage issued by the United States Army, after which he traveled the globe for 20 years in service to this country.  In 2002, he completed his service while assigned to the Pentagon, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel of Air Defense Artillery, having spent time in 35 countries on five continents with units including the 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized), the 6th Infantry Division (Light Infantry), the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) and on the staffs of the Secretary of Defense and the Chief of Staff of the Army.

In addition to his bachelor’s degree, he holds a Master's degree in Journalism from Marshall University and a Juris Doctor from the George Mason University School of Law (now the Antonin Scalia School of Law) earned by attending night school four nights per week for four years while assigned to the Pentagon.  In 2004, the family relocated to Gillette, where he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Dan R. Price II, the Honorable John R. Perry, and the Honorable Michael N. “Nick” Deegan.  In 2006 he went into private practice as an associate, and later partner, with the firm of Stevens, Edwards, Hallock, Carpenter & Phillips, P.C. where he practiced civil litigation until his 2017 appointment to the bench as a circuit court judge by then-Governor Matt Mead.

His first novel, Misjudged, was released in November 2020 and quickly made its way to the top of the Amazon charts, reaching as high as #6 in the entire Kindle Store, and to date has received more than 20,000 reviews on and  His second novel, One and Done, was received just as well, and has remained near the top of the Amazon charts since its release in February, 2021.  Just six weeks ago, the third novel in the series, False Evidence, launched and within days had climbed into the top five on Amazon’s Legal Thriller bestseller list.

When he isn’t working or writing, he’ll likely have a fly rod, shotgun or rifle in hand.  He and his wife are blessed with two wonderful adult daughters and one grandson.  He is a recipient of the Western Horizon Award and a member of Wyoming Writers, Inc. and the Mystery Writers of America.  You can follow him on Facebook and through his website, although he has no idea how either works, and depends heavily on his publisher’s staff to make that happen.  He can be reached via email at, and is proud to say that to date he has personally responded to every reader email received.
