Programs

Educational programming for children and adults is an important component of our mission at the Rockpile Museum. Two annual programs that are especially popular for Campbell County school children are 1890s School and World War II Day.

1890s School1890s School

This program allows third-grade students to step back in time and participate in a school day as it would be conducted during the 1890s. Campbell County’s pioneer history is woven into everyday life for children as they experience classroom rules and instruction with a schoolmarm, wear clothing typical for the time period, participate in schoolyard games and eat a pioneer-style lunch, among other things. Added authenticity comes from the setting: the museum’s Oriva-Morrish Schoolhouse, one of the area’s original country schools. Overall, this program is designed for students to discover the differences between contemporary and pioneer school life.

Below is a sample schedule of a pioneer school day; the subjects taught and instruction times were decided by the teachers.

9:30 - 9:45: Opening exercises (Pledge of Allegiance, etc.)
9:45 - 10:05: Penmanship
10:05 - 10:30: Arithmetic
10:30 - 10:45: Recess
10:45- 11:15: Recitation
11:15 - 11:30: Reading
11:30 - 12:00: Spelling Bee
12:00: Lunch/Dismissal

Family Day Programs

A more recent addition to the museum’s educational offerings are Family Day programs. Three events are held at the museum during the fall and winter seasons, which in the past have included science and holiday themed activities. Be on the lookout for more information about upcoming events on the museum’s homepage.

More Educational Opportunities

In addition to school programming, the Rockpile hosts a number of special events for all ages. Some past events have included appraisal fairs, Native American artifact shows, and Pumpkin Buttes field trips. Throughout the year, we also offer presentations and numerous temporary exhibits focused on Wyoming history, culture, and the arts.
