The Campbell County Rockpile Museum focuses on local and regional history with an emphasis on the culture and people of Campbell County, Wyoming. The Rockpile Museum serves as the local history center for the residents of and visitors to Campbell County with a mission of "Collect, Preserve, Educate.  The Campbell County Rockpile Museum tells the story of the Powder River Basin."  Permanent and changing exhibitions along with educational programming, performances, and events provide insight into the interesting past and present of the area.

Admission

Beginning July 1, 2021the Rockpile Museum moved to an Admission FeeWe apologize for any inconvenience and hope you will continue to support and enjoy all that the museum has to offer.  The fee schedule is as follows:

The Rockpile Museum has joined the Museums For All, a signature access program of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), administered by the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM), to encourage people of all backgrounds to visit museums regularly and build lifelong museum-going habits. The program supports those receiving food assistance (SNAP) benefits visiting the Rockpile Museum for FREE, up to four people, with the presentation of a SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card.   The Rockpile Museum will also extend this benefit to those in the Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC) with the presentation of a WIC EBT card.  Free admission for Museums for All guests in 2023 is sponsored by First Intestate Bank of Gillette.  Similar free and reduced admission is available to eligible members of the public at more than 700 museums across the country. Museums for All is part of the Rockpile Museum’s broad commitment to seek, include, and welcome all audiences.

Artifacts on Display

Located in the heart of coal country in northeast Wyoming, visitors to the museum enjoy large collections of:

  • Rifles
  • Saddles
  • Native American artifacts
  • Fossils
  • Wagons
  • Other memorabilia

Along with our popular dress-up area for kids, there are many hands-on activities for both children and adults to engage in while touring the museum. Come watch a video tour of an excavation and blasting at a coal mine and then see how the coal is transported to various locations.

Exhibit AreasMuseum Schoolhouses

The museum is comprised of two large buildings and several outdoor exhibits. The main building has four exhibit areas called the Kintz Room, Main Room, Campbell County Room, and Gallery. Additionally, the gift shop is located near the entrance. The museum Annex Building is located across the parking lot and features larger exhibits and structures including a Homestead Shack and Ranch Blacksmith Shop. The museum also has two rural schoolhouses on its grounds as well as a caboose, boxcar, windmill, and horse-drawn farm equipment.

The Rockpile Museum is the winner of the Wyoming Office of Tourism 2012 REACH Award for Destination / Attraction of the Year.
